The American Film Institute was established in 1967. It is an independent non-profit organization. It is developed by the National Endowment for the arts. It is managed by the National Film Theater in Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center until 1998. Before Kennedy Center, it screened Movies in the Auditorium of the National Gallery of Art.
