Wood Buffalo National park is Canada’s largest National park and one of the premier parks of the world in terms of total land area it constitutes. Established in 1922, located in Alberta and Northwest territorial and sprawling over 11,070,000 acres of land, the park was primarily established to protect the last remaining herds of wood bison in northern Canada. It happens to be the habitat of a large variety of wildlife species such as both plain and wood buffalo (bison), caribou, moose, deer, beavers, black bear, wolf, lynx, brown bear, snowshoe hare, Sandhill Crane, Ruffed Grouse, and the world's northernmost population of Red-sided Garter Snakes.
The peace-Athabasca Delta is one of the largest inland fresh water deltas in the world which covers the southern portion of the National park. This portion constitutes a remote corner of the Boreal forest which is the only remaining nesting grounds for migratory whooping crane, the tallest native.
The Wood Buffalo park in 1982 was recognized by the interNational union for the Conservation of nature (IUCN) for conserving the peace-Athabasca Delta and the whooping crane nesting areas. The Ramsar sites of the park under the Ramsar Convention were later designated and aims on identifying and protecting critical habitat for migratory birds. The Wood Buffalo National park awarded the world heritage site for the biological diversity of the Peace-Athabasca Delta by UNESCO in 1983.
The Boreal forest, salt pains, and gypsum karst landforms comprises the topographic features of the National park. The elevation of the park ranges from about 183 m (600 ft) at the Little Buffalo River to 945 m (3,100 ft) in the Caribou Mountains. The most Famous and approachable location of the park is the Boreal near the Northwest Territories Town of Fort Smith.
The Fort Smith and Fort Chipewyan are the two main accesses to the National park which can be reached by airways or waterways. During summer temperatures range from 68°F-86° and during the cold period the temperature floats between minus 13°F and minus 22°F.
