The Tamil Nadu medical Council (TNMC) is a legislative body established in the year 1914 under the provision of Tamil Nadu medical registration act. The Council offICE is located at Vadapalani, Chennai. The functions of the Council include maintenance of disciplinary control over the State’s medical practitioners and issue of warning notICE in Case of any breech similar to that of the Indian medical Council. The Council is also responsible for maintain the medical register which includes names of the doctors who possess any of the recognised medical qualifications. The Council can warn a medical practitioner, refuse to register or remove their name from the register if the doctor is found to be guilty in any medico Legal Case or is sentenced for any non-bailable offence in any professional respect. The Council can also re-enter the name of the practitioner in the register. The Council is also responsible for acCrediting CME’s for the Credit hours.
The Council consists of ten members in total out of which seven are elected on the basis of voting done by the registered medical practitioners who are members of the Council and three are Government nominated by the State Government. As per the Tamil Nadu medical registration act 1914 the President and the VICE-President of the TNMC are elected amongst the members themselves and by the elected members. The Executive Committee of the Council consists of the President, the VICE-President and three other members who shall be elected in the prescribed manner.
