Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius is a South African former professional sprinter. He was the 10th athlete to compete at both the Paralympic Games and Olympic Games. Pistorius ran in both nondisabled sprint events and in sprint events for below-knee amputees. In 2012, Pistorius became the first double amputee to compete in both the Olympics and Paralympics. He competed in the 400-meter race and the 4 × 400-meter relay at the Olympics. Pistorius won six gold medals over three Paralympic Games. At the 2012 Paralympics, he won gold in the men's 400-meter race with a Paralympic record time of 46.68 seconds. He also won gold in all three sprinting events in the T43/44 category at the Beijing Paralympics. Pistorius set a disability sports world record for the 400 meters at the 2007 South African Senior Athletics Championships. He also set a world record for the 400m in 47.49s at the Beijing Paralympics. On 5 January 2024, Pistorius was released on parole after having served nine years of his sentence.
