Jurgen Schult is a German former track and field athlete and, from 1986 until 2024, the world record holder in the discus throw. Schult represented East Germany in the 1988 Olympic discus competition, where he won the gold medal. In 1986, Schult threw the discus 74.08 meters (243.0 ft), breaking the previous record of 71.86 meters (235.8 ft) set by Soviet athlete Yuriy Dumchev. This record stood for 37 years and 9 months before being broken by Mykolas Alekna. Schult won a gold medal in the World Championships in 1987, and also won silver and bronze medals in 1999 and 1993, respectively. Schult competed in four consecutive Olympic Games from 1988–2000, winning a gold medal in 1988, a silver medal in 1992, and finishing in sixth place in 1996 and eighth place in 2000. Schult was the chief national coach for discus in Germany in 2001, and became responsible for all technical disciplines in Germany in 2011. Schult was educated as a machine construction worker in the former GDR, but later trained as a sports scientist.
