Andersonville Prison also known as Andersonville National Historic Site built in 1864. It was Confederate prisoner-of-war camp during the American Civil War. It held large numbers of prisoners which gave it the appearance of large city. The numbers of prisoners held captive here were nearly 45,000. It was so overcrowded that the prisoners here were started to die with starvation, malnutrition, diarrhea and other communicable diseases. It was liberated in May 1865. It is now the memorable site and was added to the NRHP in October 16, 1970. In 1998, The National Prisoner of War Museum came into an existence dedicated to all American prisoners of war. It displays the objects, art, photograph, experiences etc of American Prisoners of war in all periods.
